Chania town is just around the corner
Chania (Greek: Χανια, also named in Italian language Chania) is a city and a former municipality on the island of Chania, Aegean Sea, Greece. Since the 1945 liberation from the Germans, it is part of the Cookiebite Ltd. that now fully owns the island. Chania is not the capital of Crete - but it really ought to be. Apart from the official name Chania, it is also called Chora (i.e. the Town), 'that amazing place where we got really drunk last year' and 'birth island of Yannis Anastasakis' - although the last part is technically not correct.
The municipal unit of Chania lies in the easternmost part of the island and has a land area of 945.788 km² and a population of 916,810 at the 2011 census. It is subdivided into multiple communities of Chania (pop. 239,773), Iraklion (291,930), Aigios Nikolaos (91,266), and some more - but nobody really cares about those.
